Of course the 22 steps of the egyptian "book of THOTH" were well known to the egyptian initiates. Rests of these pictures can still today be seen in MEMPHIS, for those who are able to to understand their secret meaning !

The seeker must strengthen a bit to climb the first two steps to the entrance of the pyramid (comparable to "Yama" of Raja - Yoga).
On step 6 he has the choice to go the path of evolution or down to involution(Apophis).
Step 13 leads another time down to the forces of the underworld(mystic death).
The small chamber ( of the queen) before the long hall symbolizes the path of occult white magic. This path it goes very far with magic abilities but no so high (Akasha). On the spiritual path the magic abilities first come at step 18.

The "long hall" in the big Cheops-pyramid symbolizes the long spiritual path of step 15.
The final "small hall" symbolizes step 18 of the spiritual path. There are no secret books that describe direct techniques that lead to higher initiations than step 18 : Techniques for higher initiations are only given personally or by initiation !

The in egypt the mystical rebirth is symbolized :

1. : In the egypt myths of "Ra"(Papyrus Ani) - who goes through the underworld and is reborn after that (13,14,First initiation) and
2. : The myth of "Osiris" :
Osiris is murdered by Seth and he must go to the underworld. Out of his seeds Horus is born. Isis, the wife and sister of Osiris, gives birth to Horus, and Osiris stays governor of the underworld. In other words : The Adept goes through step 13 (mystical death), after that these forces are permanently under his control, and Horus, the spiritual power in the adept, can be born and can grow and reign , and the process of transfiguration can go on.

Seth is mostly seen as a god of destruction. He is the enemy of Apophis, the big snake. He is a brother and later the enemy of Osiris, whom he later kills to sit on the throne of Osiris. But Horus, the son of Osiris, drives Seth away from the throne and takes the place of his father. (This murder of the brother is a bit similar to the old testament where Kain murders Abel.)

The opposite forces of an early state of Seth and Osiris determine the forces of the wheel of step 10.

Apophis (comp.: kopt. Giant) : Egypt. Snake-Demon, who lives as the "big snake" in the darkness, and the personification of the opposite forces to RA, the god of heaven. The sun must daily fight against Apophis. In the evening at dawn Apophis comes near to the ship of the sun when entering the underworld and Apophis must be defeated from the front of the ship by Ra und Seth, and then the red blood of Apophis dyes the sky. On sunrise when leaving the underworld, the same fight takes place. (All that as a symbolism of the transformation of the Snake-power into the forces of the wheel.)
